The Process of Hand Block Printing

Block printing has become popular because through a very simple process such a sensational prints can be created in rich and vibrant colors, though Originally natural dyes have been replaced by chemical and artificial colors.

The main colors used are red, yellow , blue and saffron . The main tools of the printer are wooden blocks in different shapes and sizes called bunta. Blocks are made of seasoned teak wood by trained craftsmen. The underside of the block has the design etched on it.

The fabric to be printed is washed free of starch and soft bleached if the natural grey of the fabric is not desired. If dyeing is required as in the case of saris, where borders, or the body is tied and dyed, it is done before printing. The printing starts form left to right. The color is evened out in the tray with a wedge of wood and the block dipped into the outline color (usually black or a dark color). When the block is applied to the fabric, it is slammed hard with the fist on the back of the handle so that a good impression may register. A point on the block serves as a guide for the repeat impression, so that the whole effect is continuous and not disjoined. The outline printer is usually an expert because he is the one who leads the process.

The art of block printing

The attractive art of block printing employs wooden or metal blocks to print designs or patterns by hand. The thing that makes block printing unique is that the design has to be created by the artist before the Printing begins and then after it is carved onto the block by hand. The colors used are normally vegetable dyes. Mineral and non-toxic chemical dyes are also used. The carved block is dipped into the required color, and then it is used to design the fabric.

Printing Tools

The main tools of the printer are wooden blocks in different shapes and sizes called bunta. Blocks are made of seasoned teak wood by trained craftsmen.

The Colours

Printing colours are freshly mixed each day by the colour master. He maintains a complete record of the recipes of various colours. Colour masters often have to amend the recipes to compensate for changes in weather and alterations in the dye lots. The colours may have mineral, vegetable and/or non-toxic chemical origins.

SOMA SHOP - Indian Garments Exporters and Suppliers

"Soma Shop is a Jaipur, India-based producer of hand block-printed textiles. Exacting Production standards make every item unique: A 90-by-108-inch bedspread gets about 1,400 different stamps, and different sized bolts of cloth are printed differently. So although a table cloth and a napkin may feature the same print, they were cut separately from a plain bolt of Fabric and printed and stitched accordingly. Everything is made from 100% cotton. Soma Shop's strongest suit is their enormous design repertoire: Prints range from authentic and colorful birds, trees, fruit and flowers, bordered by the bold blues and reds typical of Rajasthan, to tropical fish in bright greens and pinks more reminiscent of Lily Pulitzer than the Third World. Everything from cosmetic cases and coasters to napkins, tablecloths and bedding is available here, and men's, women's and children's clothing is for sale as well."
